Hello, students! An intern is needed to assist in the day-to-day operations of a Shanghai-based charity. Shanghai Young Bakers is an organization that provides training in French pastry and baking to Chinese youth who are marginalized. It enables them to get qualified jobs and live independently after they graduate.

Internships are available to both remote candidates and in-person applicants. (Yes, you can work as an intern while on a student visa.

Three positions are available:

Communication Coordinator Intern

Under the direction of the SYB executive director, the Communication Coordinator designs and implements SYB’s entire external communication strategy. This is done with the support of all SYB volunteers and staff.

The time commitment for at least four days per week, at most six months.

Primary Responsibilities: Promote Shanghai Young Bakers activities and work to the general population.

  • Write and collect articles. Keep up to date social media and other online communication: SYB website.
  • Weixin, Weibo and Facebook are social networks.
  • As Chief Editor of the SYB monthly newsletter
  • When necessary, update the SYB website content.
  • All promotional materials & products (brochures and kakemonos), photos, videos …), most to
  • The Social Enterprise activities are of great benefit (public classes announcements, catering seasonings and CSR events)
  • Translate posts and articles from English into Chinese and get support from volunteers
  • The SYB team will handle all media inquiries. Coordinate/follow up with journalists.
  • Assist in organizing various SYB events and raising awareness about SYB activities.

Position requirements:

  • Passion for working for an international non-profit organization that is growing and interested in learning and social issues.
  • Learn more about NGO operations within a Chinese context
  • You are looking to get experience in communication, journalism, and PR
  • Native level in Chinese is fluent in English.
  • Candidates eager to learn French or improve their French language and culture knowledge are encouraged to apply.

  • Although technical knowledge and experience are not required, they would be a great asset.

Social Enterprise Assistant

We seek a friend and reliable baker lover to join our multicultural team and help with our social enterprise promotion and organization. Let the world know about our public classes and help with French bakery workshops and training. And, do it all while doing good!

You may need to adjust the job description to be more compatible with their skills, interests, and availability.

Time commitment minimum four days per week (including Saturdays) for a minimum of 6 months.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Participate in the promotion of commercial activities
  • Assist in the operation of catering services
  • Assist with the organization of open bakery/pastry classes as needed
  • As the SYB market coordinator
  • Register at regular markets (Jiashan Market, SEE Market…). If necessary, find new markets where you can participate.
  • Participate in the weekly bakery/pastry and commercial teachers meetings (Monday mornings). Coordinate with teachers and social enterprise teams about the markets schedules and other pertinent information. Stay informed of program news.
  • Participate in the Volunteer Meeting (held every other month in the evening) and market volunteer opportunities to potential volunteers
  • Volunteers should be trained and coordinated for the markets.
  • Other tasks as needed

Position requirements:

  • A growing international non-profit organization, a passion for social issues, and a desire to learn more about NGO/social enterprises operations in a multicultural Chinese environment.
  • Proficiency in English and Chinese
  • Candidates eager to learn French or improve their French language and culture knowledge are encouraged to apply. It is highly valued to be fluent in French.
  • Ability to communicate interact professionally and politely, particularly in cross-cultural settings.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • You are interested in gaining hands-on experience with social entrepreneurship and improving your marketing, PR, language, and project management skills.
  • We are grateful for any knowledge or experience in graphic design (including Photoshop).

Partnership Coordinator Intern.

As a Partnerships Coordinator intern, you will be responsible for nurturing and managing strategic relationships with current partners and supporting their commitment to social responsibility through communication work.

Time commitment at most four days per week (6 months minimum).

Primary responsibilities:

  • We provide branding support and follow up on existing partnerships.
  • Monitor and develop hotel partnership partnerships.
  • Maintain good working relationships with potential employers.
  • Aid in the organization of major SYB events and outside networking opportunities.
  • We welcome other professional initiatives that raise awareness about the SYB’s actions and promote its image or partners in China and overseas.

Position requirements:

  • You are looking to gain experience in Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Communication/PR across various companies.
  • Passion for working for an international non-profit organization in growth and interest in learning about NGO operations in China.
  • Fluent in English, Chinese and other languages
  • In a multicultural environment, you need to communicate and interact well.
  • Professional ability to listen and present
  • Excellent organizational skills and responsiveness
  • You will enjoy working in a team or independently.

About Shanghai Young Bakers

Shanghai Young Bakers is an organization that provides training in French pastry and baking to young Chinese people aged 17–24. It enables them to get qualified jobs and live independently after high school.

SYB supports young adults in need who have had to drop out of high school due to their family circumstances (parents’ illness, death, disability, imprisonment) and are therefore excluded from employment.

SYB students receive a one-year training program that teaches them valuable French pastry and pastry, Chinese baking, life skills, English, and practical internships in 5-star hotels. In addition, due to the demand for qualified Chinese bakers, 30 students start a new life as pastry chefs or bakers and can support their families each year.

In 2008, established the charity program. We created the charity program in 2008.

SYB is managed by a small but highly diverse multicultural team. It operates under the Chi Heng Foundation’s governance.
