Victor:
Hello, my name is Victor, age 18, from Mauritius. We have both been students at BLCC in China. We are studying to learn the fundamentals of Mandarin. It’s been nearly one year since I came to China, and I came here mainly because my parents originate from China.
After moving to Mauritius, I felt that my family was slightly separated from their roots. This is why my primary goal was to discover my cultural background.
Mauritius is well-known for its beautiful beaches.
Laura:
Hello Laura, I’m Laura. I’m 21 years old and come from Mauritius too. The same is the scenario for me. My parents are Chinese. They are from China. When I finish secondary school, it would be more beneficial to move to China.
I want to learn about the heritage of my ancestors and master the basics of Mandarin. I’d like to know the origins of my grandparents. This is also out of curiosity.
In Mauritius, virtually no one is fluent in Mandarin. I want to master the basics of Mandarin so that I can think, speak, and listen to Mandarin. We decided to join BLCC, located in China. It’s a huge adventure. For nearly eight years, we’ve been working on mastering the basics of Mandarin throughout China. I see massive growth.
There’s a lot more to do to effectively speak Mandarin, but we are progressing. My experience is that I am slightly lazy, so it took me a lot more time than other people.
Mauritius is a melting pot of different cultures. The Chinese Spring Festival is an annual celebration in the country.
What are the teaching methods working at BLCC?
Victor:
Instructors in the BLCC BLCC located in China are excellent and professional. We are quick to learn and aren’t lost; it’s straightforward to follow the classroom. Teachers strive to help us to become a part of the school. They assist us with every issue we have and are not afraid to correct us if we make mistakes.
Laura,
It’s perfect. They push us to be better. I have noticed that they’ve got lots of knowledge. Teachers are highly encouraging. In my case, my mother’s best friend recommended the school.

How did you learn about BLCC? How are you finding Beijing?
Victor:
There were many positive comments that if you are looking to master Mandarin, BLCC in Beijing is the best option. In terms of living conditions, Beijing can be described as the top. We’ve made quick progress in Mandarin. We’re very well-trained.
A mother’s friend gave me the chance to visit China. He knew that I wanted to travel to China. He assured me that he could assist me, and I don’t regret taking advantage of this opportunity to the fullest extent.
The most extended electric bus that is pure and unrefined can be located within China.
Laura:
Beijing has a vast population, and we were worried that we’d be lost each day. After a couple of weeks, we discovered that the transportation system in Beijing is efficient and straightforward to get around. It’s clear to navigate around Beijing. Its subway network is very well designed, and we have never been lost.
China is highly modern, developed, and technologically modern. Virtual wallets are excellent. There is no need for cash in a bank, and we don’t even carry around a wallet. Everything is done via phone; it’s convenient.
The Chinese don’t carry cash because of the method of payment. Instead, they use mobile apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay.
What’s the most enjoyable benefit of attending BLCC located in Beijing?
Victor:
To me, it’s peace of mind. We can concentrate without feeling disturbed. It’s a lot of fun, and I enjoy living here. BLCC has an international student body. We have a lot of students from various countries. We use this time to explore different cultures and get to know new people. This changes our lives for the better and provides us with many experiences.
It is essential to understand what you can do to control your money regarding budgeting. I’d say RMB 2000 is adequate. Anywhere between 2500 and 3000 is sufficient. However, it’s dependent on your lifestyle. If you are a regular eater at the canteen, you’ll not need a lot of money.
Laura:
Chinese foods are very distinct from those of Mauritius. At first, it wasn’t an extreme shift for me. It was average. At times, we’d miss Mauritian food.

What are your goals after you have completed your studies during BLCC?
Victor:
What I plan to do shortly is to remain in China. I want to pursue the studies I have in China. To survive in China, it is best to learn Mandarin first. Learning with BLCC in China has helped me tremendously.
Laura:
Personally, it was a good decision. I decided to go on a sabbatical before beginning the graduate program. I wanted to explore the world. I’m hoping to visit Canada to continue my studies in accounting and finance. When I am done with my work on a degree, I plan to go back to China to become fluent in Mandarin.
Students from other countries claim to feel an innate sense of belonging in China due to the Chinese.
What advice would you give to international students who wish to pursue their studies in China?
Victor:
Do not be afraid to leave China. Do not be scared to speak to locals to improve mistakes, rin. Don’t be scared to make mistakes because we make mistakes and learn. Even when Chinese individuals appear a little reckless, they will not be reluctant to assist and help you correct yourself.
